My teacher gave us an "end of the year reflection" and these are my responses
What were your favorite assignments? Why?
- My favorite assignments were any of the ones that involved me working with cardboard. I liked being able to experiment with how I tore apart my canvas to create my image. It brought a whole new level of experimenting for me; this was exciting.
- My least favorite assignment was really only the ink resist. It was just a failure of technique due to technical reasons. I didn't like my results.
- To any students looking to take AP Studio in future years please make sure you know what you are getting yourself into. This class is intense and incredibly stressful. We completed 12 pieces each semester. This may not seem like a lot until you realize there are only 18 weeks in a semester. We, on average, were completing an AP level piece of art every week. Please understand that this class is YOUR TEST. You have to be doing your best work constantly, 24-7, no exceptions. As scary as this seems, it is the most rewarding AP class you can take. You may get good grades on tests in your other AP classes but not a single one of them gives you 24 pieces that you poured your sweat and tears (and sometimes blood) into. I would know. Including AP Studio I have taken nine AP classes. Five of them were taken this year alone.
- Looking back, it wasn't time that gave me issues with completing my work. Time is easy to work around for me. I would change my thinking. I would think faster. There were some pieces that took me a month to complete because I couldn't figure out what I wanted to do, where I wanted to experiment, and where I would draw inspiration from. If I could I would go back in time and tell myself to think faster or to just start going and think later.
- I think I am not really too concerned with this. I have other things on my mind like what classes I am going to sign up for in the fall at CSU. Though, in regards to art and education of art, I think it's important. Art has been a part of our human race for thousands of years. It was art that gave birth to the study of science and math. We need art. I don't think art should be a mandatory class because people born for math and science wouldn't do well. Every student should take at least one art class though. You might find something in yourself that you overlooked before.
- I am leaving with a better understanding of what I like to work with as an artist. I am leaving with a better understanding of how my curiosity works and what it wants.
